As east coast residents anxiously brace for Hurricane Irene, you might find of interest the front pages of two newspapers after Hurricane Carol ripped through the New York area 57 years ago.

Our next blog post will be about Carol and the devastation it brought to Levittown and the northeast. Included will be two stunning photos that show the flooded intersection of Hilltop Road and Valley Road in Levittown.

FYI everyone... Hilltop and Valley STILL floods! So does Schoolhouse and Division Ave. And Loring Road also floods... just north of the athletic fields there. Used to be the old drag strip. Runs in a straight line parallel to Wantagh State Parkway- no stop signs for the whole length. It's got to be more than a quarter mile...maybe almost 1/2 a mile. Still a street many go very fast on- including me. I get from my house to my daughters that way... takes me about 7 minutes to go about 3 miles when I make the light at Loring Rd.

I will try to get out and get some photos of Levittown after Irene hits. Right now it looks like we will be dead center in the storm here in Levittown. Tough old town- she can take it!!!

I was 6 when Hurricane Carol hit and I still can remember how those trees bent all the way down to the ground during the storm. Hope it is not too bad out there in Levittown. I am sure Rockland county will be hit, too.

From Roslyn Haberman, class of 1961

I remember the scary feelings as we prepared for Carol. We gathered in our basement with windows blocked, breakable stuff moved and bushes and trees we had covered up. It was like waiting for the end of the world.I was only 10 and was trying to keep my emotional Mom at ease. Our area was pretty lucky during that Hurricane.
