Record blizzard makes Levittown a winter wonderland

Fellow Division Avenue High School alumni who now live in sunbelt places such as Florida and Southern California only get to see blizzards on television and the internet. It's not nice to gloat, but some of us do.

The best thing about heavy snow when we were teenagers was that school was sometimes closed. The second best thing was the cash that could be made by shoveling sidewalks. Those were pre-snow blower years.

The photos of the very recent record snowfall were snapped by Marilyn Monsrud '63 on her street in Levittown. She reports that winds reached 60 miles per hour. One of the black and white photos is of Marilyn and her sister Susan from 1950 on Boat Lane.

The other vintage shot is of snowy Blue Bell Lane from around 1954 and was provided by Karen Biro Hewson '60. We don't know if Karen is gloating, but she lives in Florida.

From Martha-Marti Traystman Welch '60:
We were on LI for Christmas and, due to the pending arrival of the blizzard, we left for FL 7:30PM Christmas night.

We drove until we got to North Carolina (on Interstate 95) where the road was impassible. We spent from 6:30AM Sunday until about 2PM Sunday in a motel and then headed south again. The road was much better by then, although it was still snowing. We crossed the South Carolina border into GA about 10:00PM Sunday and took off this again this morning heading for Florida, no more snow.

We arrived in the chilly south at about 3PM. The temps today were in the 40's and expected to drop to freezing overnight. Brr-r-r-r for Florida. I understand that Miami is having some freezing weather too.

I love reading your blog and it really brings back the time when life was so wonderful with no responsibilities and lots of good times.

It's 82 degrees F in Israel today.
Not that I'm gloating but we are supposed to be in the middle of winter. We have had so little rain this year that we now have to pay a draught tax on all the water we use which really increases our taxes. From Roya Sitkoff Harel

Forgive me, for I do gloat, lol. It's cold down here in sunny FL, only about 48 degrees but should reach the 70's by the weekend. I prefer my winter wonderland in a photograph, thank you very much...
